How long to wait before swimming after rain
Rain changes the water quality at British and Irish bathing spots, with or without sewage in the mix. Pollution happens on dry days too. Here is what happens after rain, and how long it lasts.
Why rain changes the water
In many older urban areas, the rain that lands on roofs and roads goes into the same pipe as the water from your toilet and your shower. The Environment Agency calls this a combined sewer, and says England's was built by the Victorians in many urban centres. When enough rain falls the pipe cannot hold it all, so storm overflows let the excess go to a river or the sea instead of backing up into homes and streets.
Government guidance puts the number of storm overflows in England at around 14,500. They operate under permits issued through the Environmental Permitting (England and Wales) Regulations 2016 and the Urban Waste Water Treatment (England and Wales) Regulations 1994. A spill in heavy rain is usually permitted rather than unlawful. Spills outside a permit's conditions, including dry weather spills, are a different matter and can be prosecuted.
Either way, that is a statement about the pipework, not about the water. What comes out is untreated sewage, and it enters the water where people swim.
Sewage is not the only thing rain carries
Even where nothing spills, rain washes bacteria off the land. Natural Resources Wales says heavy or prolonged rainfall can wash pollutants from roads, fields and urban areas into rivers and seas. SEPA names livestock farming within the catchment as a key source of the bacteria that turn up at Scottish bathing waters. A stream that looks fine on a dry day can carry a lot after a downpour.
So water quality can drop after rain at a beach with no sewage outfall anywhere near it. A quiet overflow map is not the same thing as clean water. The map can only show monitored overflows. No marker near your spot may mean nothing is there, or that nothing is watching.
How long the effect lasts
Two regulators give a waiting time. Ireland's EPA says you should not swim for 48 hours after any heavy rain, and that the impacts are generally short lived, typically one or two days. SEPA advises against bathing during heavy rainfall and for one to three days after it. The Environment Agency gives no wait, but classes short term pollution as pollution expected to affect a bathing water for less than 72 hours.
So wait two days after heavy rain. SEPA's advice stretches to three days, so three is the cautious choice.
In the 2025 bathing season, the 1,140 English storm overflows affecting designated bathing waters spilled 6,780 times, and the average spill lasted 2.8 hours. That 2.8 hours is a season-wide average. It tells you nothing about the spill at your beach, which could still be running.
What the 48 hour rule depends on
It is a rule of thumb, not a measurement of your beach. Nobody is sampling the water at the moment you get in.
The official pollution risk forecasts use rainfall alongside tides, wind, sunlight and season, so conditions and location change how fast a place recovers.
It also depends on how much rain fell and how dry the ground was first. Two days after a light shower on already soggy ground is not the same as two days after a downpour. Rainfall tells you the risk went up. It does not tell you what is in the water today.
What to check before you go
Open your beach's page here for any current pollution warning, and for live overflow activity where it is published, then use the rain as a second check.
England's default bathing season is 15 May to 30 September, and since the 2025 amendment regulations ministers can set different dates for individual bathing waters. A sample describes the day it was taken.
Storm overflow monitoring on the island of Ireland is uneven. NI Water had 466 monitors operational by May 2026, covering 31 of the 33 designated bathing waters, with around 1,000 planned by 2028. What it publishes is a summary for the 12 months to 31 December 2025, so nothing can tell you whether a Northern Irish overflow is spilling right now. In the Republic, Uisce Eireann's open data catalogue carries no spill data at all.
If a monitor is dead, a feed is down, or a beach is out of season, we will say we cannot tell you. A gap in the data has never meant the water is clean.
