Can I Swim?

Has anyone been ill after swimming?

Nobody official records this. The regulators test the water for bacteria and the water companies publish what their pipes are doing, but whether people actually got ill afterwards is written down nowhere. So this site keeps the record: every report below came from a swimmer, was read before it was published, and is kept for good.

Reading the record…

How to read these numbers

  • They are reports, not cases. Nobody has examined anyone; this is what people said happened to them.
  • They are not proof the water caused it. People are ill for all sorts of reasons, and a swim on the same day is not a diagnosis.
  • More reports can simply mean more swimmers. A popular beach will collect more than a quiet one even if the water is identical, so this is not a league table and is deliberately not presented as one.
  • Few reports is not a clean bill of health. Most people who are ill after a swim never tell anybody, least of all a website.
  • Dates are kept to the month, and nothing else about the person who reported it is kept at all.

If you have been ill

Speak to your GP, or call 111. To have it looked into properly, tell the local council’s environmental health team — they can act, and this site cannot. Telling us as well is what builds the record.
