Cold water, and what it actually does to you
The sea around Britain and Ireland averages about 12C. Every beach page on this site shows a temperature and one line saying what it means. This is the longer version, and the honest answer to the question people ask most, which is how long they can stay in.
Why 15C, and why there is no scale below it
The RNLI defines cold water as anything below 15C. So do RoSPA, HM Coastguard and the International Life Saving Federation, and four bodies arriving separately at the same number is about as firm as this gets.
What there is not, anywhere, is an agreed set of bands below that line. This site does not colour-code the temperature and will not, because the physiology does not support a ladder. The breathing response that catches people out peaks somewhere between 15C and 10C and gets no worse at 5C. An amber at 12 and a red at 8 would tell you something false about most of the British sea for most of the year, and it would make 15.5C look like permission.
So there are two states on the beach pages. Below 15C, and above it. Above it does not mean warm.
It is the first minute, not hypothermia
Cold water shock is the thing to understand, and it is routinely confused with hypothermia. They are not the same and they do not happen on the same timescale.
Going into cold water makes you gasp involuntarily and breathe fast, and it drives up your heart rate and your blood pressure. The RNLI's own wording is that cold water can seriously affect your breathing and your movement. If your head goes under during that gasp, you breathe in water. That is the mechanism, and it happens in the first seconds.
The RNLI says the initial effects pass in less than a minute. That is why Float to Live is the advice and swimming hard for shore is not: for that first minute you cannot reliably control your breathing, and fighting it is what exhausts people.
Hypothermia takes far longer, usually half an hour or more in British sea temperatures. It is a real risk on a long swim and it is almost never what kills somebody in the first few minutes. The intermediate danger is losing the use of your hands and arms, which happens well before your core temperature drops and is what stops people climbing out.
How long can I stay in?
Nobody publishes an answer, and this site will not invent one.
You will see one minute per degree quoted widely, as though 12C water buys you twelve minutes. No safety body states it. The Outdoor Swimming Society, who have more reason than most to want a simple rule, say plainly that it is not true. It appears to have started as a rule of thumb between swimmers and hardened into something that looks official.
The reason there is no number is that the answer depends on your body, what you are wearing, how acclimatised you are, how hard you are working and how far you are from getting out. Those vary more between two people in the same water than the water varies between two days.
The useful version is not a stopwatch. Get in slowly rather than jumping. Know where you are getting out before you get in. Stop while you can still use your hands, because you will need them to climb out and you will lose them before you notice.
Inland water is colder, and nobody measures it
The RNLI says inland water like lakes, rivers, lochs and reservoirs can be colder than the sea even in summer. Deep water stratifies, so the surface can be pleasant and two metres down can be shocking.
This site shows no water temperature at all for rivers, lakes, reservoirs or waterfalls, because none is published. SEPA measures none anywhere in Scotland. Natural Resources Wales measures none across its stations. No water company publishes a reservoir temperature. The satellite products that cover lakes do not include these ones and run weeks behind.
The Environment Agency does publish a temperature at a handful of river gauges, enough for four or five of the inland sites here. It is not shown, deliberately. The reach below a lake warms by about a degree on a sunny afternoon, which is warm in the dangerous direction, and a degree is exactly the width of the line between 15.4C and 14.4C. A figure that is wrong warm, at the cold water shock threshold, on the warm still days when most people get in, is worse than no figure.
So treat inland water as cold. That is not a hedge, it is the most accurate thing that can be said.
The wind matters more than people expect
An offshore wind is blowing off the land and out to sea. It flattens the water, so the sea looks inviting, and the beach feels sheltered because you have your back to the wind. It is much stronger once you are on the water than it is on the sand, and it pushes you away from the shore.
That combination, looking calm and taking you away, is why offshore wind is on every beach page here rather than only the surfing ones. This site works out which way each beach faces from the shape of the coast, so it can say off the land or onto the beach rather than leaving you to do the compass arithmetic.
The number to watch is the gust, not the average. Gusts commonly run well above the sustained wind, and it is a gust that takes an inflatable or a paddleboard out of reach.
Getting out is part of it
Afterdrop is the reason a cold swim can go wrong after it has finished. Cold blood from your limbs keeps moving inward once you are out, so your core temperature carries on falling for a while.
Which means the air temperature and the wind matter as much as the water. A cold, windy day on the sand after a short swim can be worse than the swim was.
Dry off and dress before you feel you need to, put on more than you think, and have a warm drink. Do not have a hot shower or a hot bath straight away.
There is no honest way to put a feels-like number on this. The standard wind chill index is defined for dry skin below 10C air, and no equivalent exists for a wet body. So this site shows you the air temperature, the wind and the gust, and does not pretend to combine them.
